Okay, so you’ve seen the trendy photos of floating bookshelves all over Pinterest and you’re ready to take the leap and install some of your own floating bookshelves. But there’s one problem — you have no idea how to do it. Don’t worry, I actually installed some of my own floating bookshelves so I’m here to walk you through it step-by-step.
1. Find floating bookshelves you like and order them
The first step is to pick your shelves. Take some time to browse online. Be sure to pay attention to the weight limits and make sure the shelves can handle the number of books (and maybe a plant or two) you’re planning to put on them. Amazon, IKEA, and Wayfair are great places to start your search. If you’re unsure about the finish or material, order one shelf first to see how it looks in your space before committing to multiple.
Here are the floating shelves I ordered from Amazon:
2. Get ready to install (gather all your supplies)
Once your shelves arrive, it’s time to gather your tools. Here’s what you’ll need:
- A level (because crooked shelves are a no-go)
- A power drill with the appropriate drill bits
- Wall anchors (if you’re not drilling into studs)
- A measuring tape
- A pencil
- A stud finder (optional but highly recommended)
- Screws (usually included with the shelves, but double-check)
Clear the area where you’ll be working, and maybe grab a friend to help. In this case, I grabbed my husband to help me out. Usually, an extra set of hands makes a world of difference.
3. Installation time!
Here’s where the magic happens. Start by using the stud finder to locate studs in the wall. Floating bookshelves are best installed on studs for maximum stability, especially if you’re loading them up with heavy books. If you can’t find a stud in the right spot, use wall anchors to keep your shelves securely mounted.
Next, use your measuring tape and pencil to mark where you want the shelves. A good rule of thumb is to place them at eye level or slightly higher if you’re creating a display wall. Make sure to measure the spacing between shelves if you’re installing more than one.
Drill pilot holes where you’ve marked the wall, then attach the brackets or mounting hardware according to the instructions. Once the brackets are secure, slide the shelves into place and use the level to double-check that everything is straight. Tighten any screws as needed.
4. Now for the fun part (add your books)
With your shelves securely in place, it’s time to start loading them up! Arrange your books in a way that’s visually appealing. You can even organize by color if you’re feeling adventurous. If you’re worried about stability, put your heaviest books on the bottom shelf as this will help balance the weight and keep things secure.
5. Spice it up with decorative accents
Books are the main attraction, but don’t forget to add a little personality with decorative accents. Small potted plants, picture frames, candles, or art objects can make your shelves feel curated.
Final tips and tricks
- Double-check weight limits: Floating shelves are sturdy, but they’re not indestructible. Always keep the weight limits in mind when arranging your books and decorations.
- Keep a step stool nearby: If your shelves are on the higher side, a small step stool will make it easier to rearrange or grab books.
And that’s it! With your floating bookshelves installed and styled, you’ve officially upgraded your space. Snap a photo, show it off on social media, and enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done.
